Todd Young Career
Todd Young enrolled in the United States Navy and reported for duty at Newport, Rhode Island, after graduating from high school. He was appointed by the Secretary of the Navy to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in May 1991, where he was chosen class officer. He earned a B.S. in political science and a commission in the United States Marine Corps after graduating with honours in 1995.
Young went to the Basic School at Quantico, Virginia, after graduating from Annapolis for six months of training. He graduated from Dam Neck, Virginia’s Naval Intelligence Officer Basic Course in 1996. VMU-2, an unmanned aerial vehicle squadron stationed in Cherry Point, North Carolina, had an intelligence section under Young’s command. Young completed his MBA at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business in 2000 while stationed in the Chicago region.
In 2000, as a U.S. Marine Captain, Young was honourably retired from active duty. Young studied at the University of London’s Institute of United States Studies for a year after leaving active duty. In 2001, Young obtained his MA in American politics after completing a thesis on the economic history of Midwestern agriculture.
He relocated to Washington, D.C., in 2001, for a brief stint at The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think organisation. After that, he worked as an aide to Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana. Young helped Mitch Daniels’ campaign for governor of Indiana in 2003 as a volunteer. He attended the Republican state convention in Indiana as a delegate. Young worked for Orange County, Indiana, as an Assistant Deputy Prosecutor from 2007 until 2010.
Young graduated from Indiana University School of Law in 2006, and he went on to practise law in Paoli, a tiny town in Indiana’s southern region. He ran for the Ninth Congressional District of the United States four years later. Young was swept in as part of the Tea Party’s countrywide campaign, giving the 112th Congress a markedly conservative character.
Young easily defeated his Democratic opponent. Young, on the other hand, quickly fell afoul of the caucus by crossing the aisle to engage with Democratic members on a variety of topics, including plans to resolve the federal government’s budget-related shutdown. Young also supported legislation that incorporated several of the controversial Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’s features. Within the framework of party politics, his general voting record was deemed moderate, prompting attempts from the right to remove him.
Before running in 2016 to succeed retiring U.S. Senator Dan Coats, Young was re-elected three times with ease. He was up against Evan Bayh, a long-serving and well-known Indiana politician. Despite this, Young won the U.S. Senate election by a 10-point margin with the help of conservative donor organisations around the country.
