Thom Tillis Career
Tillis worked at Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he assisted with the computerization of records in collaboration with Wang Laboratories, a Boston-based computer firm. Tillis was finally hired to work in Wang’s Boston office.
He was stationed there for two and a half years before being relocated to Chattanooga and finally Atlanta. In 1990, he was hired by Price Waterhouse Coopers, an accounting and consulting business. Tillis was elevated to partner in 1996. He and his family relocated to Cornelius, North Carolina, in 1998.
In 2002, PricewaterhouseCoopers sold its consulting arm to IBM, and Tillis followed suit. Tillis began his political career in Cornelius in 2002, when he was elected to the town’s park board after advocating for a local bike route. In 2003, he ran for town commissioner and came in second place.
Tillis stood for the General Assembly in 2006 after serving as a town commissioner for two years. In the Republican primary, he beat incumbent John W. Rhodes and went on to win the election uncontested. In 2008, 2010, and 2012, Tillis was re-elected without opposition. In 2009, he formally departed IBM. In 2010, he served as the head of the House Republican Caucus’ campaign.
Tillis was elected Speaker of the North Carolina House after Republicans secured a majority for the first time since 1998. He was the fifth Republican to occupy the position, and he was overwhelmingly reelected in 2013. Tillis and North Carolina Senate President pro tempore Phil Berger were selected “GOP Legislators to Watch” by Governing magazine in 2011.
Tillis’ state house reorganised the state’s tax system, redrew North Carolina’s congressional districts, and approved legislation that allowed current state rules and regulations to sunset and new laws to be limited to 10 years.
Tillis presided over legislation that reduced early voting days, invalidated ballots cast outside one’s precinct, and required particular types of picture ID in order to vote after Republican Pat McCrory was elected governor in 2012. A top Tillis staffer had previously sought statistics on picture ID possession by race, which revealed that black individuals would be far more likely than white people to lose their right to vote if such legislation were to pass.
Tillis claimed he needed the information to make sure the bill didn’t break any federal anti-discrimination rules. In 2014, 14 individuals were detained after holding a sit-at in Tillis’ office to protest cutbacks to the earned income tax credit programme and Tillis’ unwillingness to expand Medicaid.
Tillis stated in 2014 that he will not seek reelection to the state House of Representatives, instead opting to run for the United States Senate against first-term Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan. Previous Florida Governor Jeb Bush, then-North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory, former Presidential contender Mitt Romney, and the US Chamber of Commerce all backed him in the Republican primary.
As a more conservative alternative to the bipartisan DREAM Act, he offered a 15-year route to citizenship for some illegal kids. He initially opposed President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to divert funds to a border wall, but following pressure from his party, he voted for it. He has finally admitted that climate change is real after earlier denying it, but he still opposes the Paris Agreement and the Clean Power Plan.
