Rick Caruso was born on January 7, 1959, in the city of Los Angeles, California. Henry Caruso, his father, was the founder of Dollar Rent-A-Automobile and the owner of a number of car dealerships in Los Angeles. Gloria, his mother, used to be a billboard model.

Caruso earned a bachelor of science degree in 1980 from the University of Southern California, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and a law degree in 1983 as a Margaret Martin Block Scholar from Pepperdine University School of Law. Caruso made a $50 million contribution to Pepperdine University School of Law in 2019, which will be renamed the Rick J. Caruso School of Law in honour of the historic gift. The gift, made through the Caruso Family Foundation, will help the School of Law expand educational opportunities for exceptional, historically underserved students—a hallmark of the Caruso family’s philanthropic efforts in the Los Angeles area and beyond—as well as fund several initiatives to improve academic programming.

Caruso, a longtime USC supporter, also established the USC Caruso Department of Otolaryngology at the Keck School of Medicine and the USC Catholic Center, which offers spiritual support to professors and students of all faiths. He graduated with honours from the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business and received his Juris Doctorate from Pepperdine School of Law as a Margaret Martin Block Scholar.

Caruso was elected Chair of the University of Southern California’s Board of Trustees and Executive Committee in 2018. He is also the Chair of the Loyola High School Board of Trustees, a member of the Pepperdine School of Law Board of Councilors, and a member of the boards of The Irvine Company, St. John’s Hospital, and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Foundation.
