Khaled Hosseini Biography
Khaled Hosseini was born in 1965 in Kabul (Afghan). His father was a diplomat in the Afghan Foreign Ministry and his mother was a high school teacher of Farsi and history in Kabul. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent the Hosseini family to Paris in 1976. They were willing to return to Kabul in 1980, but by this time their country had seen a blatant communist takeover and the Soviet army invasion. The Hosseini’s sought political asylum in the U.S. and moved to San Jose in California in September 1980.
Hosseini finished high school in 1984 and graduated from the University of Santa Clara with a bachelor of biology degree in 1988. He joined the University of California, San Diego, medical school the following year, where he graduated in medicine in 1993. He finished his residency at the medical facility in Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles and was an intern from 1996 to 2004.
In the early seventies, Hosseini’s father was assigned in the embassy of Afghanistan, in Tehran, Iran, where young Khaled improved his understanding of Iran and Afghanistan’s classical Persian literary heritage. Although Afghan culture lacked a strong literary fictional heritage, Hosseini liked translating international literature and started to write his own stories.
He also met with his family cook, a member of the Hazara ethnic community, which had been discriminated against in Afghanistan for a long time. Young Khaled Hosseini taught the alphabet to read and write, and he had the first understanding of his own society’s inequalities.
The Hosseini’s lived in Kabul when in 1973 the 200-year-old Afghan monarchy was toppled. The cousin of the King, Daoud Khan, declared himself President of the new country, although a lengthy period of turmoil had started. Hosseini’s father was posted to the embassy in Paris in 1976, and Khaled went to France alongside the rest of his family.
Hosseini’s got married to Roya and two children, Haris and Farah. The family lives in the north of California. He is proficient in Persian and Pashto, describing himself as a lay Muslim

Khaled Hosseini Career
Though at the time he had not known it, it would be 27 years before he saw his homeland again. Just two years after they arrived in Paris, a Communist group killed Daoud Khan and his family, overthrowing Afghanistan’s government.
Hosseini had continued to create short tales during his medical education in his leisure time. He settled happily in his new nation, and he found his thoughts coming back to the land he left behind. Following the Soviet exit in 1998, the extreme Taliban party gained power over Afghanistan and imposed a cruel theocratic government, and provided the basis of anti-Western terrorism.
Women’s rights, championed by earlier administrations, were entirely abolished together with all foreign art or culture. Hosseini felt obligated to tell the world something about his past before war and authoritarianism ravaged his nation. In 2001 he decided to attempt to develop one of his stories into a novel with the support of his wife and father-in-law.
Every morning he awakened to work on his novel for one and a half years before a full day of visiting patients. When the United States and allied nations started military operations in Afghanistan, he pondered abandoning the project, but with the Taliban’s fall, he thought it was more essential than ever to tell the world his tale.
With the gaze of the world turned on his country, he finished his story of two Afghan lads, boyhood friends who are divided by wars and the diverging courses of their lives. When Hosseini got an agency to deal with the manuscript, he immediately wrote the book with publisher Riverhead Books, a Penguin group branch. The Kite Runner was published in 2003, with little fanfare.
The book’s initial hard-cover sales were modest but word of mouth was gradually built up when copies were transferred from reading to reading. The paperback edition gained an enthusiastic worldwide audience. The Kite Runner has been on The New York Times’ best-selling list for over two years and has been back on the list five years after its first appearance.
As a result, it sold more than 12 million copies, with published editions in more than 40 languages. Although in many quarters it was applauded, other Afghans objected to the depiction by Hosseini of ethnic discrimination in Afghanistan. Hosseini had no regrets, hoping that his approach to the topic would trigger a needed conversation among his compatriots.
After the popularity of his book, Hosseini returned for the first time in 27 years to Afghanistan. He was surprised by the defeat of the city that he knew over years of conflict, yet the typical spirit of hospitality and charity remained unaltered. Everywhere he heard the horrors endured by his compatriots.
In addition to the Khaled Hosseini Foundation, which offers humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan, his official website includes information and links to various relief groups supporting Afghanistan.
The organization was founded in 2007 following a trip to Afghanistan by Hosseini. Hosseini, who was there for the first time in 207 years, was extremely troubled to find the circumstances in the nation in which he was born.
Then the Kite Runner became a widely renowned film in the far west of China, photographed in the province of Kashgar. Even if the film’s producers were American, the film was shot in the Dari language to retain the realism of the narrative. A scandal developed in Afghanistan because the video portrays a sexual attack on a young kid.
Traditionalists have threatened the young actor and his family with violence, believing this portrait is disgusting. The release of the film was postponed while the kid and his family moved.
