J. M. Coetzee is a South African-born writer, essayist, linguist, and translator who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2003. He is widely regarded as one of the most critically praised and awarded authors working today in the English-language medium.

J. M. Coetzee Biography

On 9 February 1940, John Maxwell Coetzee was born, the eldest of two children, in Cape Town, South Africa. During the years 1941-45 he worked with the South African Army in North Africa and Italy. His father was trained as a lawyer, but only occasionally. Although the parents of Coetzee weren’t of British origin, it was English that was spoken at home.

In Cape Town and in the adjacent village of Worcester, Coetzee obtained his initial training. He attended a school in Cape Town administered by the Marist Brothers for his secondary training. In 1956 he enrolled.

In 1957, Coetzee joined Cape Town University and then graduated in English and Mathematics in 1960 and 1961. He worked as a computer programmer from 1962–65 in England and researched a thesis on the English author Ford Madox Ford. Coetzee was awarded a Ph.D. in English and Germanic languages in 1965 and attended the Austin Graduate School at the University of Tejas in 1968. His thesis focused on Samuel Beckett’s early fiction.

Coetzee had been an assistant professor of English for three years (1968–71) at Buffalo State University. He returned to South Africa after he had been refused a permanent residency application in the United States. From 1972 to 2000 he was appointed professor of literature in a series of appointments at the University of Cape Town.

He also taught regularly in the USA between 1984 and 2003: New York State University, Johns Hopkins University, Harvard University, Stanford University, and Chicago University where he served on the Social Thought Committee for six years.

Twice, McEwan was married. His first marriage was with astrologer, Penny Allen, with whom he had two kids. In 1995 the wedding terminated. McEwan married Annalena McAfee, two years later in 1997, to a reporter and writer formerly editor of The Guardian’s Review. McEwan resides in London. In London.

In 1969 Coetzee started to write novels. He was published in South Africa in 1974 with his debut novel, Dusklands. South Africa received the then main literary award, the CNA Prize, in Heart of the Country (1977), and was published in Great Britain and in the United States. Internationally notified waiting for the Barbarians (1980).

The Life & Times of Michael K (1983), who was awarded the English Booker Prize, established his fame. Followed by a Booker Prize award winner Foe (1986), Iron Age (1990), Petersburg master’s degree in 1994, and Disgrace (1999).

Coetzee also authored Boyhood (1997) and Youth, two fictitious autobiographies (2002). The Animal Lives (1999) is an enigmatic lecture that subsequently is taken up in Elizabeth Costello (2003). White Writing (1988) is a series of articles about the literature and culture of South Africa.

Doubling the Point is a series of articles and conversations with David Attwell (1992). A study of literary censorship is Giving Offense (1996). Stranger Shores (2001) includes his subsequent writings in literature.

As a Dutch and Afrikan literary translator, Coetzee was also busy. Coetzee went to Australia in 2002. He resides in Adelaide, South Australia with his girlfriend Dorothy Driver, where he is honorary at Adelaide University.

The format of Coetzee’s Elizabeth Costello (2003) – a number of “lessons” in which the titular narrator reflects on a range of themes (two of which have been published in a previous book) – confused many readers. An assessor suggested that “non-fiction” be examined. A recent amputee’s refusal to accept his situation, Costello achieves a strange resurrection in Coetzee’s Slow Man (2005).

Bad Year Diary (2007) uses a narrative style, which is actually separated into stories, with text on this page the most important tale being the reflection of an aged South African writer patterned on Coetzee himself. A child and his guardian screen for the mother of the kid in The Childhood of Jesus (2013), a dystopian society from which pleasure and desire were supposedly sprinkled. First, the school days of Jesus (2016) and the death of Jesus were followed by a trilogy (2020).
