George Saunders Biography

George Saunders was born in Amarillo, Texas, on December 2, 1958. He grew up around Chicago, where he graduated from Oak Forest High School. He then studied geophysics at the Colorado Mines School in Golden, Colorado.

Saunders went to the University of Syracuse and got a Masters’s in Creative Writing from Saunders. Some years later, Saunders taught the same topic to the students of the Institute.

George Saunders has two children with her, Caitlin and Alena, and is married to Paula Redick. Saunders has the 2006 MacArthur Fellowship and Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2018, he became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Before joining Syracuse University, George Saunders worked as a geophysical engineer and technical writer for the company Radian International. He taught creative writing to the pupils.

Saunders began creating fictitious stories at Syracuse University while teaching. Many of his stories have been consistently published. In the mid-1990s, he began writing novellas, a shorter form of novels. His book ‘CivilWarLand in Bad Decline’ was published in 1996 and includes a collection of short stories and novices. In the same year, he was one of the finalists for the PEN/Hemingway Award.

In 2000, he published another successful book entitled ‘Pastoralia’ which contains short tales and novels. In 2006, his book ‘The Nation of Persuasion,’ a short story collection, was released and awarded the Story Prize. In 2013 George Saunders published his most popular work, the book ‘Tenth of December: Stories.’ It has been nominated for several prizes. The novel won him a position in the last shortlist of the 2014 National Book Award for Fiction. The book was also picked as one of the top 10 novels of 2013 by “The New York Times Book Review.”

The experimental book “Lincoln in the Bardo” was written by George Saunders in 2017. Saunders authored a full-length novel for the first time. The 368-page book was a great success for the author. The novel was featured in ‘USA Today’ and ‘The New York Times’ as the bestseller.
