George R. R. Martin Biography

George R. R. Martin was born on September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey, United States. A government housing complex near the Bayonne docks, where he went to elementary school, had just been built next door to his great grandmother’s house on Broadway.

To escape his little environment of home and school, he turned to literature. He also penned monster stories, which he sold to other kids in the area for pocket money.

A Catholic boy’s school, Marist High, eventually lured him away from Mary Jane Donohoe. He joined the chess team and wrote for the school newspaper during his time there. It was at this time that he developed a fascination with Marvel comic book characters and began writing fanfiction for comic magazines, eventually earning an award for best fan-fiction for the superhero story “Powerman vs. The Blue Barrier” for it.

While in Evanston, Illinois, he studied at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, where he earned a bachelor’s of science in journalism. The next year, he went on to finish his M.S. in Journalism at Columbia University.

The Vietnam War made him eligible for the draught, but he refused to serve because he believed that America’s engagement was a “bad mistake.” Instead, he obtained conscientious objector status and avoided military service. Instead, from 1972 to 1974, he provided alternative services through the Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation-affiliated organization VISTA.

In the early 1970s, George R. R. Martin had an affair with science fiction/fantasy novelist Lisa Tuttle, with whom he co-wrote the sci-fi fix-up novel “Windhaven.” A year later, at an East Coast science fiction conference, he met Gale Burnick and the two were married in 1975.

However, the marriage ended in divorce two years later in 1979. On February 15, 2011, he married his longtime partner Parris McBride in a modest ceremony at their Santa Fe home. Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary in New Mexico is a cause dear to both of their hearts.

George R. R. Martin Career

George R. R. Martin utilized his chess abilities to land a position as a tournament director for the Continental Chess Association after Bobby Fischer’s 1972 world chess championship victory. From 1973 to 1976, as the chess mania faded down, he organized weekend chess tournaments while also working five days a week as a journalist.

At Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, he met English professor George Guthridge in the middle of 1970 and, with his aid, got a position teaching English and journalism. From 1976 to 1978, he taught at the institution and later served as a ‘Writer In Residence.’ Martin’s “The Hero,” which was published in the February 1971 edition of “Galaxy,” was his first professionally sold fiction.

For his work “Sandkings,” he received the 1975 Hugo Award for Best Novelette. In 1980, he won the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award for “Best Novelette.” First came fame for his horror books followed by financial failure, then Vista purchased the cinema and TV rights to his 1980 novella “Nightflyers” and turned it into a film in 1987, saving his career.

After being hired as a writer for the CBS reboot of ‘Twilight Zone,’ he relocated to Los Angeles to begin a new career as a television program scriptwriter. His next job was writing and producing for ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ a fantasy-drama series on CBS.

Tolkien’s work had long been an inspiration to Martin, and he set out to create his own epic fantasy saga in the form of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire. The first book in the trilogy, titled ‘A Game of Thrones,’ was written by George R.R. Martin in 1991 and released in 1996.

In the meanwhile, he believed that there should be a break in between ‘A Dance with Dragons’ and ‘The Winds of Winter,’ two additional books in the trilogy. To make things more interesting, he had planned for the second book in the series, titled ‘A Dance with Dragons,’ to appear five years later.

It took him three years to write the fourth book, which was released in November 2005, and six years to complete the fifth book, which was released in July 2011. ‘Game of Thrones,’ which premiered in April 2011 and has Martin extensively involved in the production, was created by HBO after purchasing the television rights to the whole series in 2007.
