Debbie Stabenow Career
Stabenow campaigned for public office for the first time in 1974 while a graduate student at Michigan State University, motivated by the possibility of the closing of a local nursing home. She was elected to the Ingham County Board of Commissioners for the first time in November 1974, becoming only the third woman to do so.
She served on the board from 1975 to 1978. In 1977 and 1978, Commissioner Stabenow was the first woman and youngest person to chair the board of commissioners. Ken Hope, one of her political mentors, was the chairman before her. She also played a key role in the formation of a women’s commission in Ingham County.
In a primary election in 1978, Stabenow ran against Michigan State Representative Tom Holcomb. She was elected to the 58th House District after winning the primary and then the general election. From 1979 until 1990, Rep. Stabenow was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives.
She rose to prominence in state Democratic politics and was the first woman to chair the House of Representatives. Stabenow decided to compete for the Michigan Senate seat vacated by Senator William A. Sederburg in 1990. In 1990, she ran for the State Senate and won both the primary and general elections, assuming office in 1991 and serving for one term until 1994.
When she was elected secretary of the Democratic caucus on November 16, 2004, Stabenow became the third-ranking Democratic Party member in the United States Senate. She aided Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid in shaping the Democratic agenda and priorities as caucus secretary. Senator Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Democrat, was named minority whip.
Following the withdrawal of Tom Daschle’s nomination for Secretary of Health and Human Services by President Barack Obama, the National Organization for Women recommended Obama to choose Stabenow, citing her focus on health care and “her background as a social worker.”
Following Blanche Lincoln’s defeat in 2011, Stabenow was elected chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee. The renewal and revision of the 2012 United States Farm Bill was a contentious issue during Stabenow’s term.
Stabenow introduced the Gun Lake Trust Land Reaffirmation Act on October 29, 2014, which would restore the status of lands held in trust by the Department of the Interior for the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band. The measure would clarify that under the Supreme Court ruling Carcieri v. Salazar, the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band’s land trust could not be challenged in court.
From 2011 through 2015, Stabenow chaired the Senate Agriculture Committee. When Carl Levin retired on January 3, 2015, she became the state’s senior U.S. senator. In 2017, she was elected chair of the Senate Democratic Policy Committee.
