Daniel Day-Lewis Career
Daniel Day-Lewis made his acting debut at the age of 14 in the film ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday,’ in which he portrayed a vandal. He considered the experience of working on a film was divine, and on top of that, he was compensated for vandalizing high-end automobiles.
Day-Lewis began his career in theatre and did not appear in a film again until 1982. In 1982, he received his first adult role, a tiny role in the film ‘Gandhi.’ Even though it was a minor role, it was critical to his career.
The films that best exemplified his acting ability were ‘My Beautiful Laundrette’ (1985) and ‘A Room with a View’ (1985), both of which premiered in New York on the same day. Thus, it provided both the audience and the critics with evidence of his extraordinary performance.
In 1987, he landed the main role in ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Being’ alongside Juliette Binoche, in which he portrayed a Czech surgeon whose hyperactive sex life was disrupted when he falls in love with a woman.
Day-Lewis worked diligently to prepare for this role, remaining in character during the eight-month shoot. He also learned Czech during this time period in order to better connect with his on-screen character.
This was only the start of his method-acting career. In 1989, he starred as Christy Brown in Jim Sheridan’s ‘My Left Foot,’ in which he portrayed a writer and painter born with cerebral palsy who could only control his left foot.
Day-Lewis prepared for this post by regularly seeing numerous disabled individuals at Dublin’s Sandymount School Clinic.
He remained in the persona for an extended period of time and refused to leave it. He was transferred in a wheelchair by crew personnel, and he frequently requested spoon feedings.
This is just one illustration of his commitment to his characters and films.
When the film was released, it garnered him numerous accolades, including his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor. His diligence paid off, and both the crowd and critics lauded his performance.
The following year, Day-Lewis returned to theatre, starring alongside Richard Eyre in ‘Hamlet’ at London’s National Theatre. However, during a scene in which Hamlet encounters his father’s ghost, Day-Lewis collapses and refuses to return to the stage.
Day-Lewis is said to have seen his own father’s ghost during that incident.
He co-starred in ‘In the Name of the Father’ with Jim Sheridan, for which he lost 30 pounds and maintained a Northern Irish accent on and off the set.
He also spent time in prison preparing for the role, where he requested that crew members throw cold water and curse at him. His method of acting worked again this time, as the film was universally praised.
It earned him a second Academy Award nomination, as well as BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations. After a few cinematic roles, Day-Lewis went into semi-retirement to pursue his old interest in woodworking.
He learned the trade of shoemaking after relocating to Florence, Italy. He had vanished from the spotlights of show business and the media throughout this time period. After a five-year hiatus, he returned to acting in 2002 with ‘Gangs of New York.’
He co-starred with Leonardo DiCaprio in this film as a gang leader. He received critical acclaim and an award for his portrayal of a nasty gang leader.
He earned numerous honors for his performance in ‘There Will Be Blood’ in 2007. This film also earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, enabling him to join Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson as the only male actors to win two Academy Awards in two non-consecutive decades.
He starred in Steven Spielberg’s film ‘Lincoln,’ which was adapted from a biography of the former President of the United States.
When the film was released, the startling likeness between the former President of the United States and the British actor was immediately apparent. Their likeness was so uncanny that it was difficult to distinguish Day-Lewis from Lincoln.
The film grossed over $275 million globally and earned him a slew of awards. Day-Lewis’ acting coach, John Hartoch, also lauded his performance. After decades in the film industry and innumerable accolades and prizes from around the world, Day-Lewis has decided to retire.
