Amy Klobuchar Politician Biography
She was born in the United States, in the town of Plymouth in the state of Minnesota. Rose Klobuchar and Jim Klobuchar are her parents. Her mother worked as a second-grade teacher until she retired at the age of 70.
Her father, Jim, a former Star Tribune journalist and columnist, was of Slovene ancestry; his ancestors were immigrants from Slovenia’s White Carniola area. On Minnesota’s Iron Range, his father worked as a miner. Amy Klobuchar’s maternal grandparents immigrated to the United States from Switzerland.
When Klobuchar was 15 years old, her parents split. The family suffered as a result of the divorce; her father’s connection with her was not entirely repaired until he stopped drinking in the 1990s.
Klobuchar attended Plymouth public schools and graduated from Wayzata High School as valedictorian. Yale University awarded her a Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude in political science in 1982. Klobuchar interned for then-Vice President and former Senator Walter Mondale while at Yale.
In 1986, Waveland Press released her senior thesis, Uncovering the Dome, a 250-page chronicle of the 10 years of politics surrounding the construction of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. Klobuchar went on to the University of Chicago Law School after Yale, where she was an assistant editor of the University of Chicago Law Review and received her Juris Doctor magna cum laude in 1985.
Klobuchar married John Bessler, a private practise attorney and University of Baltimore School of Law lecturer, in 1993. They have a daughter who graduated from Yale University and works for New York City Councilman Keith Powers as a legislative director.

Amy Klobuchar Career
Klobuchar was a business attorney. Klobuchar was a partner in the Minnesota legal firms Dorsey & Whitney and Gray Plant Mooty before running for politics, in addition to working as a prosecutor. Klobuchar used the experience to lobby the Minnesota State Legislature for a measure that would guarantee new moms a 48-hour hospital stay. Minnesota passed the measure, and President Bill Clinton signed it into law.
Klobuchar campaigned for Hennepin County Attorney in 1994, which was her first campaign for public office. She had promised to drop out if the incumbent, Michael Freeman, re-entered the campaign after failing to earn the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor (DFL) Party’s governorship endorsement.
In June 1994, Klobuchar dropped out of the contest and endorsed Freeman for re-election. Klobuchar was a strong supporter of DFL politicians before standing for government, notably Freeman in 1990. Although the race for county attorney is nonpartisan, Freeman, like Klobuchar, is a Democrat.
Klobuchar was first elected to the office of Hennepin County Attorney in 1998, and was re-elected without competition in 2002. From November 2002 to November 2003, Klobuchar served as President of the Minnesota County Attorneys Association. Klobuchar was chastised after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis Police custody, and for her failure to prosecute police wrongdoing throughout her term, including a case involving officer Derek Chauvin, who was subsequently convicted guilty of Floyd’s murder. After she left office, the matter was not heard until after she had left office.
Klobuchar became an early frontrunner for the DFL candidacy for the 2006 election when U.S. Senator Mark Dayton indicated he would not seek reelection in early 2005. Klobuchar received the DFL support on June 9, 2006, after EMILY’s List backed her on September 29, 2005. During the primaries, she had the backing of the majority of Minnesota’s DFL state lawmakers.
Klobuchar stopped her candidacy on March 2, 2020, the day before Super Tuesday, and supported Joe Biden. Biden reportedly requested six women, including Klobuchar, to undergo official screening before being considered as his vice-presidential running partner on May 21, 2020. Klobuchar withdrew her name from consideration on June 18, stating that Biden should pick a woman of colour.
