Sanaa Lathan was born in New York City, New York, on September 19, 1971, to actress Eleanor McCoy and director and producer Stan Lathan. Tendaji Lathan, her brother, grew up to be a well-known DJ. Her parents later split, although she maintained a close relationship with both.
She was raised in Beverly Hills, California, with her father, and in New York, New York, with her mother.
She has the innate athletic ability and began her training in gymnastics and dance at an early age. Additionally, she was exposed to the entertainment world as a result of her parents. In her youth, she acted in a number of plays with the ‘Black Theatre Workshop.’

Nathan began her career by performing in both ‘Off-Broadway’ plays and the Los Angeles theatre circle. She received great reviews for her portrayal of a mother in the 1998 superhero horror film ‘Blade.’
The following year, for her portrayal in the romantic comedy ‘The Best Man,’ she was nominated for a ‘National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Image Award.
