Marilynne Robinson Biography
Marilynne Summers, the daughter of Eileen (Harris) and John J. Summers, a timber business employee, was born on November 26, 1943, in Sandpoint, Idaho. Summers was born in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to a quiet father who rose through the ranks of the forestry business and a stay-at-home mother. Her elder brother, David Summers, prophesied that he would be an artist and she would be a poet, and she had a strong relationship with him.
His prophecy came true, as he became a well-known Renaissance art historian and she became a writer. When I Was a Child, I Read Books (2012), her third collection of essays, is dedicated to him as the “first and finest of my instructors.” Summers earned her bachelor’s degree in American literature from Brown University in 1966.
She subsequently went on to the University of Washington to get her Ph.D. in English, which she earned in 1977. She based her dissertation on William Shakespeare’s Henry VI, Part 2, and developed an interest in primary texts as a result. She also married (and later divorced) around this period and adopted her husband’s surname, Robinson.
Robinson lives a solitary existence. Her two boys are grown and have their own families, and she is divorced. She doesn’t have much time for socializing because of her academic and creative goals.

Marilynne Robinson Career
Homecoming, her debut novel, was released in 1980. It was a Pulitzer Prize nominee and received the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award. “It’s as if, in writing it, she broke past the ordinary human situation with all its dissatisfactions, and accomplished a kind of transfiguration,” Anatole Broyard exclaimed. Gilead, her second novel, earned the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2004. Home, which received the Orange Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in 2008, was followed by Lila, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2014.
She’s also a nonfiction writer, with books including Absence of Mind: The Dispelling of Inwardness from the Modern Myth of the Self (2010) and When I Was a Child I Read Books: Essays (2012), as well as contributions to Harper’s, the New York Times, and The Paris Review. Robinson has had a long career in academia, working as a writer-in-residence or professor at several universities in the United Kingdom and the United States.
She is presently a professor at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she also served as the keynote speaker at the workshop’s 75th-anniversary celebration. Numerous other honorary degrees and speaking opportunities have been bestowed upon her, including the annual Esmond Harmsworth Lecture in American Arts and Letters at Oxford University’s Rothermere American Institute in 2011; Brown University’s honorary degree of Doctor of Literature; and honorary degrees from Holy Cross College, Notre Dame, Amherst College, Skidmore College, and Oxford University.
