Maria Cantwell is an American politician who has served in the United States Senate as a junior senator representing Washington since 2001. She previously served in the Washington House of Representatives from 1987 to 1993 and the United States House of Representatives representing Washington’s 1st congressional district from 1993 to 1995 as a member of the Democratic Party.

Cantwell was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on October 13, 1958. She grew up in a primarily Irish American area on Indianapolis’ south side. Paul Cantwell, her father, was a county commissioner, a city councillor, a state senator, and the director of staff for U.S. Representative Andrew Jacobs Jr., who was the Democratic candidate for Mayor of Indianapolis in 1979. Rose worked as an administrative assistant when she was a child. Her ancestors are of Irish and German descent.
Cantwell graduated from Emmerich Manual High School and was honoured into the Hall of Fame of the Indianapolis Public Schools in 2006. Cantwell obtained her bachelor’s degree in public administration from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, after graduating from high school.
Court files relating to a loan Cantwell made to her former boyfriend, boss, and campaign manager, lobbyist Ron Dotzauer, in 2001 to support him through his divorce dispute were sealed in 2006. Cantwell was listed in the divorce filings “as the ‘other lady,” according to a Sound Politics reporter who got the file unsealed.
In 1983, Cantwell relocated to Seattle, Washington, to campaign for U.S. Senator Alan Cranston (D-CA) in his failed attempt for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984. Maria Cantwell Career
Cantwell promised to abandon politics after her defeat. Rob Glaser, a political buddy, offered her a job at RealNetworks as vice president of marketing. One of her achievements was the first live Internet streaming broadcast of a Mariners-Yankees baseball game in 1995, which signalled the beginning of Major League Baseball game broadcasts on the Internet.
Cantwell launched an exploratory committee in October 1999, at the encouragement of party activists and leaders, to contemplate a run for the United States Senate against Democrat Deborah Senn and incumbent Republican Slade Gorton. On January 19, 2000, she declared for the event. Cantwell joined the race a year after Senn, and she rapidly lost the Washington State Labor Council and NARAL supports to Senn. The question of privacy arose early on. Senn emphasised her record as an insurance commissioner in preserving medical privacy.
Many predicted that the 2006 governor election would be tight, based on the close 2004 campaign between Democrat Christine Gregoire and Republican Dino Rossi. Cantwell and her Republican opponent, Mike McGavick, both won their primaries, and early predictions predicted a Republican triumph.
In one of the most closely contested races in the state’s history, she upset Republican incumbent Slade Gorton. In 2006, 2012, and 2018, Cantwell was re-elected. She became the most senior junior senator after Jeff Sessions resigned in February 2017 to become Attorney General of the United States. After Patty Murray, she is Washington’s second female senator.
