Katie Taylor was born in Bray, Ireland, on July 2, 1986. She is the daughter of Bridget Taylor and Peter Taylor. Her sister’s name is Sarah, and her siblings are Lee and Peter. Her father, who was born near Leeds and raised in Birmingham, first came to Bray to work in the amusement arcades on the seafront with his father.
Taylor studied at St. Kilian’s Community School in Bray. Her three older brothers and sisters all went to the same school. She participated in ladies’ Gaelic football and camogie with her local GAA clubs, Bray Emmets, and Fergal Ogs, in addition to boxing and association football at colleges. When she was still at St Killian’s, she was a member of Bray Runners, a local running team, and several American colleges allegedly offered her sports scholarships. She, on the other hand, chose to attend University College Dublin. Taylor qualified by her Leaving Cert grades, despite UCD’s reputation for sports scholarships.
Taylor started boxing at the age of 12 in 1998. St Fergal’s Boxing Club, which ran out of a former boathouse in Bray, was where her father coached her and her two older siblings, Lee and Peter. She beat Belfast’s Alanna Audley in the first formally recognized female boxing match in Ireland at the National Stadium when she was 15 years old.
Taylor made her professional debut on November 26, 2016, at the Wembley Arena in London, recording a third-round technical knockout (TKO).
On December 10, 2016, she fought Viviane Obenaufon in her second professional fight at the Manchester Arena in Manchester. The match was shown live on Sky Sports Box Office as part of the undercard for Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight world title fight against Éric Molina.
