John le Carre Career

Le Carré taught French and Latin at Eton College from 1956 to 1958 and was educated overseas and at the University of Oxford. He became a Foreign Service British member in West Germany in 1959 and went on to the agency in 1964. During this period he began to write novels and released his first book, Call for the Dead, 1961.

More an insurgency than a spy narrative, the smart but self-effacing George Smiley was introduced, who became the most known character of Le Carré and was included in numerous following books.

His third novel The Spy Who Came In from the Cold, in 1963, focused on Alec Leamas, an aged British agency of intelligence that ordered a government official from East Germany, was a breakthrough for Le Carre. In contrast to normal glamourous fictional spies, Leamas has no legitimate profession or position in society as a lonely, alienated person.

The novel has been quite popular, and many of Le Carré’s following writings have been turned into very successful cinema (1965).

Following a run of modestly appreciated books, the first in a trilogy based on the Smiley and his adversary, the Soviet master spy Karla, reverted to his original protagonist Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1974; Fernseh-Miniseries 1979; Film 2011). Their fight continued in The Honorable Schoolboy (1977), culminating in a successful attempt by Smiley to drive Karla’s defeat to the western part of Smiley’s people (1979; TV Miniseries 1982).

A teenage performer is convinced by the Israeli Secret Service to enter a Palestinian terrorist group in The Little Drummer Girl (1983; feature 1984; TV mini-sets 2018). A Perfect Spy (1986; Miniserie, 1987) and the story of a two-man actor are the later novels in Le Carré, the Soviet Union collapsed in the Russia House (1989; movie, 1990) in the Secret Pilgrim (1991); The Night Manager (1993 in the television series in 2016) in the Russian Parliament and Our Game (1995).

In 2001, The Constant Gardener (Film 2005) was released by Le Carré, in which a British diplomat examines the death of her wife and exposes a corrupt corporation. Two intelligence agents from the Cold War era reunite in Europe following the attacks of 11th September in Absolute Friends (2003).

A Most Wanted Man (2008; 2014 film) recounts the attempts made in Hamburg by a terrorist —the son of a colonel of the KGB. The narrative of the English couple (2010; film 2016), who are unintentionally engaged in a convoluted conspiracy involving the Russian mob, politicians, and international financiers during their tennish holiday The Kind of Traitor (2010).

A Delicate Truth (2013) is a young official who seeks to distinguish what happened during a terrorist’s official success. The Spy Who Came from the Cold is revisited by a legacy of Spies (2017), with both new and old characters. Agent Running in the Field (2019) is a 2018 spy story and contains contemporary topics such as “Brexit” (the British withdrawal from the European Union).

Le Carré died on December 12, 2020, 89 years old at Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. An inquiry finished in June 2021 found that following a fall at his house, Le Carré died.
