Jim Rogers Career
Rogers joined Dominick & Dominick LLC on Wall Street in 1964, where he learned about stocks and bonds for the first time. Rogers served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968. Rogers joined Arnhold and S. Bleichroder, an investment bank, in 1970, where he worked with George Soros. Soros and Rogers both left the company in 1973 and formed the Quantum Fund. Between 1973 and 1980, the portfolio increased by 4,200 percent, while the S&P 500 increased by around 47 percent. One of the first genuinely worldwide funds was the Quantum Fund. Rogers chose to “retire” in 1980 and travelled across the world on a motorcycle. Since then, he has been a finance guest lecturer at Columbia Business School. In 1985, he predicted that the Vienna Exchange would be a bull market. Rogers hosted WCBS’ The Dreyfus Roundtable and FNN’s The Profit Motive with Jim Rogers in 1989 and 1990. From 1990 to 1992, he rode his motorbike through China and around the world, travelling nearly 100,000 miles (160,000 kilometres) across six continents. The Guinness Book of World Records recognised his achievement. In the best-selling Investment Biker, he recounts his travels and global investments. Rogers established the Rogers International Commodity Index in 1998. Under the name ELEMENTS, the index and its three sub-indices were linked to exchange-traded notes in 2007. As an easy approach to invest in the index, the notes monitor the overall return of the indexes. Rogers is a vocal supporter of agricultural initiatives. Rogers travelled through 116 countries and covered 245,000 kilometres with his wife Paige Parker in a custom-made Mercedes between January 1, 1999, and January 5, 2002, earning him another Guinness World Record. The journey began in Iceland, which was commemorating the 1000th anniversary of Leif Eriksson’s first expedition to America. The couple returned to the United States on January 5, 2002.
Rogers became a regular guest on Fox News’ Cavuto on Business and other financial TV shows after his return in 2002. In 2005, Rogers published Hot Commodities: How Anyone Can Invest Profitably in the World’s Best Market, in which he references a Financial Analysts Journal academic study titled Facts and Fantasies about Commodity Futures, which was co-authored by Yale School of Management professor Geert Rouwenhorst. Rogers relocated to Singapore in December 2007 after selling his house in New York City for over $16 million. Rogers stated that he relocated because the investment potential in Asian markets is at an all-time high. His girls are proficient in Mandarin, which will help them in the future. “If you were clever in 1807, you went to London, if you were smart in 1907, you went to New York City, and if you were smart in 2007, you went to Asia,” he explained. Rogers remarked in a May 5, 2008 CNBC interview with Maria Bartiromo that people in China are very ambitious and determined, and that he wants his girls to grow up in that sort of atmosphere. This is how America and Europe used to be, he added. He opted not to relocate to Chinese places such as Hong Kong or Shanghai because of the high pollution levels, which may cause health issues for his family. He is, however, pessimistic about India’s future, predicting in 2001 that “India as we know it would not survive another 30 or 40 years.” Rogers backed Republican congressman Ron Paul for president of the United States in 2008.
