Jeanne Shaheen is an American politician and former educator who has served as the senior senator representing New Hampshire since 2009. She is the first female senator from New Hampshire, the first female governor of the state, and the first woman elected as both a governor and a senator.

Jeanne Bowers, better known as Jeanne Shaheen, was born in St. Charles, Missouri. Belle Ernestine (Stillings) and Ivan E. Bowers are her parents. She is a 12th-generation descendant of Pocahontas, a famous Native American leader. Bill Shaheen, a Lebanese-American attorney and political operator, is her spouse. They are the parents of three children.
She got a bachelor’s degree in English from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in political science from the University of Mississippi after graduating from high school in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. She taught high school in Mississippi before moving to New Hampshire in 1973, where she taught and co-owned a secondhand jewellery business with her husband.

Jeanne Shaheen Career
She worked on many campaigns as a Democrat, including Jimmy Carter’s 1976 presidential campaign and Gary Hart’s 1984 campaign in New Hampshire, before running for government in 1990 and was elected to the state Senate for the 21st district. In 1996, she was elected governor of New Hampshire and was re-elected in 1998 and 2000.
Shaheen succeeded former U.S. Representative and Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman as head of Harvard’s Institute of Politics in April 2005. Shaheen backed Al Gore in the Democratic presidential primaries in New Hampshire in 2000, and her husband worked as Gore’s New Hampshire campaign manager. According to the New York Observer, the Shaheens were instrumental in Gore’s close victory over Bill Bradley in the New Hampshire primary.
Then-Indiana Senator Evan Bayh, then-North Carolina Senator John Edwards, then-House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt, then-Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, and then-Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman were among Gore’s short list of prospective vice presidential choices. In response to rumours that she had been chosen, Shaheen stated that she was not interested in the position.
In September 2003, she was chosen national chairwoman of John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign after a brief stint teaching at Harvard University. On March 5, 2021, Shaheen voted against Bernie Sanders’ amendment to the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, which included a $15/hour minimum wage.
