Dwayne Johnson Career
Johnson was a good football talent who was courted by a number of Division I schools. He chose to attend the University of Miami on a full scholarship, where he mostly played defensive lineman. He was a member of the national championship squad of the Miami Hurricanes in 1991. Johnson would mostly serve as a backup, starting only one game in four years while playing behind guys like Warren Sapp, a Pro Football Hall of Famer. Johnson signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League as a linebacker after graduating with a Bachelor of General Studies in criminology and physiology in 1995. He was put on the practise squad but was released two months into the season. Johnson chose to pursue a career as a professional wrestler when his football career ended. In 1996, Johnson was given numerous tryout matches with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) by veteran wrestler Pat Patterson. He beat The Brooklyn Brawler at a home event on March 10 then lost matches against Chris Candido and Owen Hart under his actual identity. Johnson received a WWF contract after performing as Flex Kavana for Jerry Lawler’s United States Wrestling Association and capturing the USWA World Tag Team Championship twice with Bart Sawyer in the summer of 1996. Along with Achim Albrecht and Mark Henry, he got extra instruction from Tom Prichard. Although the announcers knew his true identity, Johnson made his WWF debut as Rocky Maivia, a mix of his father and grandfather’s ring names. Vince McMahon and Jim Ross encouraged him to accept this ring name, despite his initial reluctance. His genealogy was played to on TV, where he was touted as the WWF’s first third-generation wrestler. He was given the moniker “The Blue Chipper,” and his pedigree was played to. Despite his lack of wrestling expertise, Maivia, a clean-cut face character, was pushed hard from the outset. On November 4, 1996, he made his Monday Night Raw debut as a member of Marc Mero’s entourage. On November 17, he competed in his debut bout, an eight-man elimination tag match, at Survivor Series. After losing the Intercontinental Championship to Owen Hart on Raw Is War on April 28, 1997, and suffering a legitimate knee injury in a match against Mankind, Maivia returned in August 1997 and turned heel for the first time in his career, lashing out at booing fans and joining the Nation of Domination stable with Faarooq, D’Lo Brown, and Kama. He therefore refused to use the Rocky Maivia moniker, instead referring to himself as the Rock in the third person, but he would continue to be billed as “the Rock” Rocky Maivia until 1998. In his promos, The Rock would routinely disrespect the crowd, WWF wrestlers, and interviewers. The Rock continued his battle with Triple H in the weeks following, finally winning his fourth WWF Championship on April 30 at Backlash, when Stone Cold Steve Austin intervened on his side. He successfully defended his championship against Shane McMahon in a Steel Cage match the next night on Raw. The Rock fought Triple H in an Iron Man match on May 21 at Judgment Day, with Shawn Michaels as the special guest referee. With seconds remaining on the clock and the score knotted at five falls apiece, the Rock was disqualified when The Undertaker attacked Triple H, giving Triple H the 6–5 victory and the championship.
On the January 30, 2003 edition of SmackDown!, The Rock returned to set up another match with Hulk Hogan at No Way Out. The Rock turned heel again after receiving unfavourable crowd reaction during his last two matches as a result of his burgeoning Hollywood career. After defeating Hogan at No Way Out, The Rock decided to join the Raw brand. He had a number of little quarrels there, including one with the Hurricane. He then started doing “Rock Concerts,” in which he played the guitar and sang songs mocking WWE performers and fans. The Rock made his first appearance on a WWE event in over three years on March 12, 2007, via a pre-recorded promo that aired during Raw. In Donald Trump and Vince McMahon’s “Battle of the Billionaires” Hair versus Hair match at WrestleMania 23, he correctly predicted that Bobby Lashley would defeat Umaga. [ On March 29, 2008, Johnson attended at the WWE Hall of Fame to induct his father Rocky Johnson and grandpa Peter Maivia. On October 2, 2009, during the Decade of SmackDown, Johnson made his next appearance through a pre-taped promo. The Rock, along with Stone Cold Steve Austin and Hulk Hogan, made an appearance in the opening portion of WrestleMania XXX in April 2014. The Rock made a surprise visit on Raw on October 6 to confront Rusev and Lana, which culminated in the Rock removing Rusev from the ring. The Rock announced his retirement from professional wrestling on August 3, 2019. The Rock confirmed on September 30, 2019, that he will be appearing on SmackDown’s 20th Anniversary on October 4, 2019, following weeks of speculation. This would be his first visit on SmackDown since October 2014 and his first broadcast appearance since April 2016. He’d cut a commercial with Becky Lynch during the event before being stopped by King Corbin. The Rock and Lynch celebrated in the ring after attacking Corbin. The Rock made a cameo via recorded video message at Impact Wrestling’s 2020 Bound For Glory to induct Ken Shamrock into the Impact Hall of Fame.
