Fischer was a member of the Nebraska Legislature from 2005 until 2013, representing a rural district in the Sandhills.

Fischer was born Debra Lynelle Strobel in Lincoln, Nebraska, on March 1, 1951. Florence M. and Gerold Carl “Jerry” Strobel are her parents.
Strobel married Bruce Fischer, a Valentine native, in 1972 after meeting him at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. On the Fischer family cattle ranch south of Valentine, she and her husband reared three sons. She returned to the institution in 1987 to earn her B.S. in education.
Fischer became a member of the Valentine Rural High School Board of Education in 1990. She remained in office until 2004.
Sunny Slope Ranch, which Fischer and her husband Bruce run in Valentine, Nebraska, is the family ranch. Adam, Morgan, and Luke are their three adult sons.

Deb Fischer Career
Fischer declared her candidacy for the United States Senate in January 2012, after incumbent Democratic Senator Ben Nelson announced his retirement. Attorney General Jon Bruning and State Treasurer Don Stenberg were anticipated to face off in the Republican primary, but Fischer and three lesser-known candidates were also on the ballot.
She received endorsements from Nebraska U.S. Representative Jeff Fortenberry and 2008 Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who recorded robocalls endorsing her; and a super PAC financed by former Omaha businessman Joe Ricketts spent $250,000 on television advertising promoting Fischer and opposing Bruning just before the election.
Fischer became Nebraska’s third female senator, and the state’s first since 1954. Eva Bowring was the first woman Senator elected to a full term, having been appointed in 1954 to fill the vacancy left by Dwight Griswold’s death until a special election could be conducted to replace him later that year. Hazel Abel won the special election to complete Griswold’s term, but she did not run for re-election.
Following the 2016 nightclub attack in Orlando, Fischer stated that any legislation prohibiting persons on the terrorist watchlist from purchasing firearms would not prevent mass shootings.
Fischer indicated that she will vote to certify the election results before the Electoral College vote count on January 6, 2021. When Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol, Fischer was on Capitol Hill to participate in the count. Fischer voted against forming an independent committee to examine the January 6 insurgency on May 28, 2021.
