Danai Gurira Bio Data :
Danai Jekesai Gurira was born in Grinnell, Iowa on February 14, 1978 to Roger and Josephine Gurira. Her father worked as a professor in the Chemistry Department at Grinnell College, and her mother worked as a librarian there. Both went on to work at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville.
Danai is the eldest of four daughters. She has two sisters named Shingai and Choni, as well as a chiropractor brother named Tare.
In 2009, she made her Broadway acting debut as Martha Pentecost in August Wilson’s ‘Joe Turner’s Come and Gone’ at the Belasco Theatre. In the same year, she released the play ‘Eclipsed,’ which tells the storey of five sex slaves kidnapped by commandos in Liberia shortly before the civil war ended during the dictatorship of Charles Taylor.
In 2011, she played Isabella in Shakespeare in the Park’s ‘Measure for Measure’ at the Delacorte Theater, and in 2012, she staged her third play, ‘The Convert,’ at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. Gurira won the ‘Whiting Award’ for an emerging playwright for her play, which portrays the tension within Jekesai, a girl who escapes a forced marriage arrangement.
Yale Repertory Theatre commissioned her to write the play ‘Familiar,’ directed by Rebecca Taichman, about the experiences of a first-generation American. In January 2015, the play premiered at Yale Repertory Theatre, and the following month, it played Off-Broadway at Playwright’s Horizons, earning her the ‘Sam Norkin Award.’
Her parents, who had migrated to the United States from Southern Rhodesia in 1964, returned to Harare, Zimbabwe, after the country gained independence in December 1983, when she was just five years old.
She attended Harare’s Dominican Convent High School before returning to the United States to pursue a degree in psychology at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She went on to study acting at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts after graduation, earning a Master of Fine Arts degree.
Danai Gurira began playwriting alongside her stage acting career after completing her acting course, believing that it would allow her to better leverage her acting skills. She developed a reputation as a playwright quickly, receiving commissions from Yale Repertory Theatre, Center Theatre Group, Playwrights Horizons, and the Royal Court.
She co-wrote and performed ‘In the Continuum’ with Nikkole Salter in 2005, portraying the point of view of a Zimbabwean woman who had contracted HIV from her husband. The play received a ‘Obie Award,’ a ‘Outer Critics Circle Award,’ and a ‘Helen Hayes Award’ for Best Lead Actress after it was staged at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company and then off-Broadway.’
