Chris Hemsworth Career

Hemsworth began his acting career by starring in a number of television shows. In 2002, Hemsworth played King Arthur in two episodes of the fantasy television series Guinevere Jones, as well as one episode of the soap opera Neighbours and one episode of Marshall Law. He made an appearance on an episode of The Saddle Club the following year. Hemsworth tried out for the part of Robbie Hunter in the Australian serial series Home and Away in 2004. He didn’t get the job, but he was later asked back for the role of Kim Hyde. He relocated to Sydney to join the cast, and he appeared in 171 episodes. On July 3, 2007, he departed the cast of Home and Away. In the opening moments of J. J. Abrams’ film Star Trek, Hemsworth played James T. Kirk’s father, George Kirk. The part was first offered to Matt Damon, who declined; Abrams was pleased with Hemsworth’s acceptance. Cinema Blend’s Josh Tyler praised Hemsworth’s performance, calling it “the finest five minutes I’ve spent in a movie theatre this year.”

The film was a financial success, collecting US$385.7 million at the box office. In the same year, Hemsworth starred in the thriller A Perfect Getaway as Kale Garrity. The film was a minor success, making US$22 million against a budget of US$14 million, and garnered mixed reviews, but Hemsworth was lauded for his “appropriately dramatic” performance. Hemsworth was cast in the thriller Shadow Runner by Sony Pictures in 2011, but the project has yet to go into production. Hemsworth was cast as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe the following year. Thor, his debut film in the franchise, was released in 2011. He and Tom Hiddleston, who played Loki in the film, had both auditioned for the part, for which Hemsworth claimed he gained 20 pounds of muscle. Thor was the 15th highest-grossing picture of 2011 with a worldwide total of US$449.3 million. The film got favourable reviews, with Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times praising Hemsworth’s portrayal of the God of Thunder.

Hemsworth appeared as 1976 Formula One World Champion James Hunt in Ron Howard’s sports drama film Rush in 2013. The picture received positive reviews and was a box office triumph, making US$98.2 million against a US$38 million budget. The actor’s performance was praised by Henry Barnes of The Guardian, who praised Hemsworth for delivering the “superb screenplay” with “some skill.” Later that year, Hemsworth reprised his role as Thor in Thor: The Dark World, the sequel to Thor (2013). Despite being a commercial success with a global revenue of US$644.6 million, the film had the lowest approval rating in the MCU series, with a 66 percent approval rating on review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.Hemsworth appeared alongside Viola Davis in filmmaker Michael Mann’s action thriller Blackhat in 2015. The movie failed at the box office and garnered negative reviews. The casting of Hemsworth as a hacker was a major point of contention for many critics; as Christy Lemire of the Chicago Sun-Times put it, “Anyone who makes [their] way in the world sitting in front of a computer screen all day is not going to look as handsome as Hemsworth.” Hemsworth subsequently confessed that he was dissatisfied with his performance, saying, “I didn’t love what I performed in the picture.” “It simply seemed flat, and it was also an attempt to make something I believed people would like to see.” In 2016, Hemsworth and Jessica Chastain reprised his roles as Eric the Huntsman and his love interest in The Huntsman: Winter’s War. “They’re both battling uphill against accents they’re palpably not comfortable with, exhibiting zero chemistry, and honestly appearing to be in different films,” Oliver Lyttelton wrote for IndieWire, criticising Hemsworth and Chastain’s onscreen connection. In comparison to its predecessor, the picture failed, grossing just US$165 million. Hemsworth later joined the cast of the Ghostbusters remake film as Kevin, the receptionist. Hemsworth also featured in Men in Black: International, a spin-off of the Men in Black franchise, in 2019. The picture earned a total of US$253 million worldwide, and critics panned it for its “lacklustre action and forgettable storyline,” while the chemistry between Hemsworth and co-star Tessa Thompson was lauded.

He featured in the Netflix action film Extraction the following year, reuniting with the Russo brothers, who also acted as producers. The film surpassed Netflix’s viewing record, which had previously been held by Bird Box, with 90 million households watching it in its first month. Hemsworth was set to reprise his role as George Kirk in the rebooted Star Trek film series’ fourth instalment, but he dropped out after contract negotiations broke through in August 2018. Hemsworth subsequently claimed that the reason for his departure was due to a lacklustre script. He will also resume his role as Thor in the fourth feature, Thor: Love and Thunder, which will begin production in Australia in August 2020 and be released in 2022. Hemsworth will feature in the Mad Max: Fury Road spin-off Furiosa, which will be released on October 13, 2020.
