Angelina Jolie Biography

Angelina Jolie DCMG (born June 4, 1975) is an actress, filmmaker, and philanthropist from the United States. She has been called Hollywood’s highest-paid actress several times and has won numerous awards, including an Academy Award and three Golden Globe Awards. Jolie made her movie debut as a kid in Lookin’ to Get Out (1982), with her father, Jon Voight, and her film career began in earnest a decade later with the low-budget picture Cyborg 2 (1993), followed by her first main part in a big film, Hackers (1996). (1995). She received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the highly acclaimed biographical television films George Wallace (1997) and Gia (1998). After her parents divorced in 1976, she and her brother moved home with their mother, who had given up acting in order to raise her children. Jolie’s mother was a devout Catholic who did not force her to attend church. She grew up watching movies with her mother, and it was this, not her father’s great career, that sparked her interest in acting, though she did get a small part in Voight’s Lookin’ to Get Out (1982) when she was seven years old. Bertrand and her live-in boyfriend, director Bill Day, moved the family to Palisades, New York, when Jolie was six years old; they returned to Los Angeles five years later. Jolie then decided she wanted to be an actress and enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.

Angelina Jolie Career

Jolie began acting professionally at the age of 16, but found it difficult to get through auditions at first, as she was frequently told that her manner was “too gloomy.” She appeared in five of her brother’s student films while he was a student at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinema-Television, as well as in several music videos, including Lenny Kravitz’s “Stand by My Woman” (1991), Antonello Venditti’s “Alta Marea” (1991), The Lemonheads’ “It’s About Time” (1993), and Meat Loaf’s “Rock and Roll Dreams (1993). She began to learn from her father as she became aware of his approach of studying others in order to imitate them. During this time, their relationship was less tense, with Jolie recognising that they were in love. After winning a Golden Globe for her portrayal in TNT’s George Wallace (1997), on the life of segregationist Alabama Governor and presidential candidate George Wallace (played by Gary Sinise), Jolie’s career prospects began to improve. The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Lee Winfrey called Jolie’s portrayal as Wallace’s second wife, Cornelia, “a highlight of the picture.” The Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or Television Film went to George Wallace, which was highly welcomed by reviewers. Jolie was also nominated for an Emmy Award for her role in the film. Jolie’s first break came in HBO’s Gia Carangi, in which she played supermodel Gia Carangi (1998). The film follows Carangi’s life and career as they were destroyed by her heroin use, as well as her deterioration and death from AIDS in the mid-1980s.

Reel.com’s Vanessa Vance reflected back on the event, saying, “Jolie’s performance as Gia garnered her a lot of attention, and it’s simple to understand why. Jolie is fearless in her performance, exuding nerve, charisma, and desperation, and her role in this film is very probably the most beautiful train crash ever captured on film.” Jolie won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Emmy Award for the second year in a row. She also took home her first Screen Award. Gone in 60 Seconds, Jolie’s first summer blockbuster, was released in 2000 and became her highest-grossing picture to that date, collecting $237.2 million worldwide. “All she does in this movie is stand around, cooling down, modelling those plump, pulsing muscle-tubes that nest so provocatively around her teeth,” said Washington Post writer Stephen Hunter of her tiny appearance as the mechanic ex-girlfriend of a vehicle thief played by Nicolas Cage. After her emotionally draining part in Girl, Interrupted, Jolie subsequently said that the picture was a nice reprieve.

In the year 2004, four films starring Jolie were released. She first appeared in the thriller Taking Lives, in which she played an FBI profiler sent in to assist Montreal cops in their hunt for a serial murderer. “Jolie plays a character that clearly seems like something she has already done,” The Hollywood Reporter writer Kirk Honeycutt observed, “but she does inject an undeniable spice of excitement and elegance.” Jolie voiced her first family film, the DreamWorks cartoon Shark Tale, and had a brief appearance as a fighter pilot in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, a science fiction adventure shot entirely with actors in front of a bluescreen. Jolie was the highest-paid actress in Hollywood by 2008, at $15–$20 million per picture. While other actresses have had to take pay cutbacks in recent years, Jolie’s perceived box office appeal allowed her to collect as much as $20 million plus a share of the profits. Wanted (2008), in which she co-starred with James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman, was an international blockbuster, grossing $341.4 million worldwide. [ The movie got mostly positive reviews; Manohla Dargis of The New York Times said that Jolie was “ideally suited as a super-scary, seemingly amoral killer,” and that “she cuts the type of disciplinarian figure who can pull guys of all ages together.” Jolie was the highest-paid actress in Hollywood by 2008, at $15–$20 million per picture. Wanted (2008), in which she co-starred with James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman, was an international blockbuster, grossing $341.4 million worldwide. Jolie returned to the big screen in Maleficent (2014), a live-action remake of Disney’s 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty, after a three-and-a-half-year hiatus. The film received mixed reviews, although Jolie’s portrayal as Maleficent was praised; The Hollywood Reporter’s Sherri Linden called her the “heart and soul” of the picture, saying she “doesn’t chew the estimable scenery in Maleficent—she fills it, wielding a mesmerising and effortless force.” By the Sea (2015), Jolie’s latest directorial attempt, was a marital drama in which she co-starred with her husband, Brad Pitt, for the first time since 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The film was a very personal effort for Jolie, who took inspiration from her own mother’s life, and was based on her script. Critics, on the other hand, condemned it as a “vanity endeavour” that contributed to the film’s overall bad response. Stephanie Merry, writing for The Washington Post, remarked on the lack of true feeling, saying, “By the Sea, like its stars, is breathtakingly beautiful. In the Disney fantasy sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019), Jolie reprised her role as Maleficent, which got mixed reviews from critics but did reasonably well economically, grossing $490 million worldwide. In the fantasy film Come Away, she co-starred with David Oyelowo as the heartbroken parents of the title characters of Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. Jolie will feature in Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead, based on Michael Koryta’s novel of the same name, which will be released in May 2021. She’s also set to produce and appear in a film version of James Scott’s 2014 novel The Kept, as well as play Thena in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
