Rihanna Biography

Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born in Saint Michael, Barbados, on February 20, 1988. She is the daughter of Monica Fenty, an accountant, and Ronald Fenty, a warehouse supervisor. Her mother is Afro-Guyanese, and her father is an Irish-born Barbadian. Rihanna has two brothers, Rorrey and Rajad Fenty, as well as two half-sisters and a half-brother from her father’s past marriages, all of whom were born to separate mothers. She grew up in a three-bedroom cottage in Bridgetown, where she and her father ran a street stand selling garments. Her father’s alcoholism and crack cocaine addiction impacted her youth and contributed to her parents’ poor marriage. Rihanna had numerous CT scans as a youngster for her awful migraines, noting that “the doctors even thought it was a tumour since it was so intense.” Her parents had split by the time she was 14, and her health began to recover. She grew up with reggae music playing in the background. She went to Combermere School and Charles F. Broome Memorial Primary School, where she was classmates with future international cricketers Chris Jordan and Carlos Brathwaite. Rihanna was a cadet in a sub-military programme, and her drill sergeant was the later Barbadian singer-songwriter Shontelle. She had intended to graduate from high school, but instead chose to pursue a musical career.

Rihanna Career

Rihanna and two of her friends created a musical group in 2003. Evan Rogers, an American record producer, discovered her in her native Barbados. The girl group landed an audition with Rogers despite having no name or content. “The minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn’t exist,” Rogers said. Rihanna went to Rogers’ hotel room and sang Destiny’s Child’s “Emotion” and Mariah Carey’s “Hero,” among other songs. Rogers was so taken with Rihanna that he organised a second meeting with her, this time with her mother in attendance, and then asked her to his hometown in the United States to record demo tapes that could be forwarded to record labels. Rihanna’s demo was sent to Def Jam Recordings, where it was heard for the first time by Jay Brown, an A&R executive at the label. Brown performed the demo tape for Jay-Z, who had just been named president and CEO of Def Jam Records. Jay-Z thought the song “Pon de Replay” was too large for her when he first heard it. He invited Rihanna to audition for the label, despite his reservations. Rihanna auditioned for Def Jam in New York City in early 2005, when she was introduced to music entrepreneur Antonio “L.A.” Reid by Jay-Z. She sang a cover of Whitney Houston’s “For the Love of You” at the audition, as well as demo tracks “Pon de Replay” and “The Last Time.” Rihanna collaborated with Jamaican band J-Status and fellow Barbadian singer-songwriter Shontelle on the single “Roll It” in early 2007. The song was included in J-Status’ debut album The Beginning, which was only published in a few European countries. Rihanna had already started working on her third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad, at the time. She adopted a new musical path with uptempo dance compositions with the help of producers Timbaland, Tricky Stewart, and Sean Garrett. The album, which was released in May 2007, peaked at No. 2 in Australia and the United States and topped the charts in a number of nations, including Brazil, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. The album garnered the best critical reception of her career. Rihanna released her first live long-form video, Good Girl Gone Bad Live, on June 9, 2008. Rihanna’s concert in the Manchester Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom, on December 6, 2007 as part of the Good Girl Gone Bad Tour was featured on the DVD and Blu-ray release. A special documentary with Rihanna explaining her experiences on the tour was also included in the package. With the release of the fifth song from Good Girl Gone Bad, “Rehab,” in late 2008, Rihanna remained in the charts and was crowned “Diva of the Year” by Entertainment Weekly for her “newfound staying power.”

Rihanna’s scheduled appearance at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards was cancelled on February 8, 2009. There were allegations that her then-boyfriend, musician Chris Brown, had attacked her. On suspicion of making criminal threats, he was detained. Brown was charged with assault and making criminal threats on March 5, 2009. Rihanna suffered noticeable injuries, according to a leaked photo acquired by TMZ.com from the police department. Rihanna was featured on Jay-tune Z’s “Run This Town,” which also featured Kanye West and was released as the second single from Jay-eleventh Z’s studio album The Blueprint 3, a few months after the incident. Talk That Talk, Rihanna’s sixth album, was released in November 2011. The album debuted at No. 3 in the United States and No. 1 in the United Kingdom. “We Found Love,” the album’s lead single, topped charts in twenty-seven countries, climbed in the top ten in thirty nations, and broke numerous chart records worldwide. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for ten weeks in a row, making it Rihanna’s longest-running No. 1 single and the longest-running No. 1 hit in the United States in 2011. On the Billboard Hot 100, the song was later rated the 24th biggest hit of all time. The second and third singles, “You Da One” and the album’s title track, both featuring Jay-Z, were released to middling success. Rihanna made an appearance on Shakira’s single “Can’t Remember to Forget You” in 2014. Rihanna stated that she planned to take a year off from recording music after the release of Unapologetic and its accompanying tour, saying, “I wanted to have a year to just do whatever I want aesthetically, musically.” Rihanna left Def Jam Recordings in May 2014 to join Roc Nation, the record label that had been in charge of her career since October 2010. Shakka claimed in October 2017 that he was working on Rihanna’s “totally wild” record with her. Rihanna said in December 2018 that the album would be released in 2019, and later revealed that it would be a reggae endeavour. Rihanna and co-writers Collin Edwards, Monique Lawrence, and Alexander Ogunmokun registered the song “Private Loving” with the music publishing agency BMI in August 2019. She inked a deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing in September of this year. In an Instagram post in December 2019, Rihanna hinted that her album was finished but that the release date would be delayed indefinitely. She was then featured on PartyNextDoor, a Canadian vocalist.
